 eXTReMe Tracker

Cortland is part of the Cornstalker Collective. Drop on by and check out the other cool comics in the group!

Irregularly scheduled comic

It's another comic! I apologize for being unable to keep a more regular schedule, but I've decided no longer to rush drawing a comic just to get it up by a certain date, when taking a little extra time and effort will make it turn out the way I want it.

I will keep them coming, though. ^_^

Hello from St. Louis!

IMG_2584

I spent this weekend with nearly fifty other members of Comic Genesis hanging out together in St. Louis for this year's "cookout" meetup. For a four-day weekend we got to hang out and draw together, dance together, and check out the city with only minimal injuried to go around. I was able to get plenty of pictures while I've been here, and I have the photos available on my Flickr account if you'd like to check it out. I also have full resolution copies of our group photo, so all of you who were there can download a copy for yourselves.

We'll see you guys next year!

Oh, and Monday's comic will be a bit late as I arrived home late and am still recovering from the trip. -_-;

Free Comic Book Day!

I hope you all got out to your local comic book shops to celebrate Free Comic Book Day, and perhaps grab a copy of the new Comic Genesis book. I was the editor of the book this year, and we got some great artists featured in it. If you missed your chance to pick up a copy, there will be some available at the Keenspot booth during the Comic-Con International in San Diego (http://www.comic-con.org/index.php), July 25th to July 29th of 2007. They will likely be on sale at Keenspot's swag store online as well.

Also be sure to check out Monday's Elf Only Inn for a cute Cortland cameo in the second panel! Sortelli is 100% awesome.

Cortland cameo!

You can see Chad in the first panel of today's Emergency Exit! Check it out!

Hello from England!

I'm in London right now hanging out with Gianna of The Noob Comic, and I'm having loads of fun checking out the city and taking loads of pictures for my friends back home. You can check out some of those on my blog. Check it out, and I hope to see some of you cool Londoners at the Thing, where I'll be trying to sell a couple Cortland samplers I had made up before I flew here.

I'm off to England!

For the next week, I'm going to be visiting England to attend the UK Web Comix Thing in London. I hope all of you in the UK can manage to make it out to see my space on the floor and possibly buy a first-of-its-kind Cortland sampler, which I'll be bringing all the way from lonely old Nebraska.

Keeping busy

Since the Las Vegas trade show, a number of things have been keeping me quite busy here in Nebraska. What used to be a part-time job has suddenly become a full-time job, but I still have freelance clients to juggle as well as a comic book to put together for Free Comic Book Day. I have also managed for the first time in my life to have something of a social life, but it seems to be mostly in Omaha, which is an hour away from Lincoln. I've been driving up there several times a week to go dancing, take dancing lessons, and hang out with friends. I wound up spending the better part of a weekend snowbound on the couch at my girlfriend's apartment after a blizzard came by and unloaded five to ten inches of the white stuff on us. It was a great time, though. She and her roommate made us waffles in the morning, and I have pictures from the whole weekend on my newly-created Flickr account.

It's been a good time, but haven't had much time for the comic.I'm still updating, however, and as you can see, Cortland's world is about to get bigger as new characters start dropping in from other comics.

What happens in Vegas...

Things are going quite well out here in Las Vegas--the tradeshow was a big success and I've been having fun checking out the city in the off hours, as usual. I haven't mentioned this before, but I signed up for a blog over on blogspot.com a while ago and have been updating it with pictures and news from my recent travels. Hop on over and check it out!

Viva Las Vegas!

It might be worth mentioning that next week, I will be going to Las Vegas to attend a trade show for my day job. Land and Sky is showing some of its beds at the World Market Center, so I'll be there from Wednesday to Saturday helping out during the day and then checking out the city during the night. I've been there twice already and it's been fun so far, if anybody out there in the comic world is planning to be in Vegas between January 31 and February 3, drop me a note and let me know!

Cort by
Mort!

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, before the modern age, before history passed into myth, and myth passed into legend, Mort drew me some fan art in the form of a sweet trading card based on Team Ort, the amazing team of super sleuths who solve mysteries on Comic Genesis, consisting of Mort, Cort, Vort, and Sortelli. You know the routine. Here's the card Mort made for Cortland, and he truly doth rock.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

I'm going home for Christmas everybody, so the next four comics or so will be done in my special style of "It's nearly three in the morning and I still have to pack and wrap my presents before my flight tomorrow and I really don't have time to pour all my soul and effort into drawing these as meticulously as I usually do." Seriously, when the choice comes between my comic and my family, the family has to win out. At least this time around, I get to stay in the Grind!

Finally updating my fan art!

Angie drawn by
Robin Pierce!

I've gotten some truly sweet pieces of fan art over the past couple of months, and like a dope, I haven't taken the time to update my fan art page to share them all with you. They include this lovely portrait of Angie and her "brolly" by the amazingly talented Robin Pierce, a pen and ink drawing of Cortland by Derenge, a spur-of-the-moment comic of Cortland from Vorticus based on a Skype conversation, and some MS Paint Orc porn from Nervous Spy.

In other news, Cortland has made several appearances in Ti-Phil's comic The Volet as he draws about events that occured during my trip up to Toronto over Labor Day weekend! Check them out!

The auto insurance racket (it really HERTZ)

You want to know what sucks? Getting into a car accident in a rental car. You know what sucks even more? When the guy who runs into you has no insurance. While I was visiting Dusan "Legostar"Jeftinija in Lexington, Kentucky, I had the misfortune of being rear-ended by some local idiot who wasn't watching where he was going. He smashed up the rear-end of my rental car with his pickup, barely getting a scratch himself. He took responsibility for the accident when the police came to write a report, but when it came time to pay the bill for a smashed up fender, guess who Hertz comes after instead? ME. Right now my insurance agency is paying the lions share of damage done to the car, but since this idiot didn't have insurance, I'm stuck with the $500 deductible along with a lovely $143 "administrative fee" and a $62.64 "loss of use" fee. My agent tells me I can dispute the loss of use fee by asking Hertz for paperwork to prove they didn't have any spare vehicles to rent while the one I was driving was in their shop, but the administrative fee is almost like a blank check. Hertz could ask for any amount they wanted.

Anyhow, I'm hoping the moron who ran into me is going through just a little more grief than I am. In the meantime, a lesson to all of you who decide to rent car: ask about that administrative fee ahead of time. And next time, I'm going with Avis. They try harder.

I'm going to England!!

Yep, I'm flying "across the pond" in March next year to be an exhibitor at the UK Web Comix Thing in London. I've never been to England before (or Europe for that matter), so it's going to be quite an exciting trip.

The Chronicles of Avernyght

My good friend Mary Mevis has started up a comic called The Chronicles of Avernyght, which she has been planning since 2003! She's been collaborating on it with a few other web comic personalities online including NJ Huff and Matt Summers, and it's very cool to see it online at last. Go check it out!

Forumies double comic update!

You guys are in luck! For the next three weeks, in order to stay in the Lazy Grind, I'm going to be drawing Forumies comics in addition to running the guest comics for Cortland. Enjoy!

The guest comics are coming!
(And hey, look! Cameos!)

I've been dropping the ball here on updates, but things have been happening recently in the comic world. Starting tomorrow and running for a couple weeks, we'll have nine different guest artists covering the "story so far" in Cortland's world, bringing you new readers up to date with everything's that's happened in the comic's two and a half year history! Starting tomorrow, look for guest comics by Angry D. Monkey, IV Studios, RYClaude, Pimpette, Liberty Cabbage, Sortelli, Humbug, Desfunk, and NJ Huff!

We also have a couple kick-ass cameos that you may have missed: Cortland is one of the cameo halloweeners getting spooked in Strange Happenings, and he appears again as a plush doll carried by a little girl in Parallel Dementia! Go check them out!

Help make the Comic Genesis Free Comic Book Day book happen!

The following comics will be featured in the book when it is released to the world on Free Comic Book Day:

Read Tales of the Travelling Gnome!

Tales of the Traveling Gnome is a web comic that's been on the Cornstalker forums for a while now and it's part of the Cornstalker collective we started up semi-officially last week. It's written by Matt Summers and drawn by Michelle Mayo, quite an amazing artist who I had the chance to meet at the St. Louis cookout last June. It updates once every two weeks or so, and you could probably drill through the archives during a coffee break, but it's some high-quality fantasy that's definitely going place. I'll bet you'll see this artwork on the glossy pages of Marvel, DC, or Image before long, so go check it out while it's free and on Comic Genesis!

It begins again!

Cortland begins its new update cycle this week, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We know a lot of you are coming in from the Blank Label Comcis, so a special welcome to you guys! Also, hello again to the readers from Dominic Deegan! Since you're all new to Cortland, you may want to click through the archives by using the handy Storyline dropdown below.

Fan Expo in Canada

I'm hanging out in Toronto this labor day weekend with some of my good friends from Comic Genesis, and we're all going to be "stalking" around the Fan Expo this weekend. If any of you happen to drop by, look for some crazy kids wearing Cornstalker t-shirts!

The guest comics cometh!

This is one of the coolest things that's ever happened for my comic: I put out a call for guest comics and I'm getting all sorts of awesome artists volunteering! Today is some gift art from NJ Huff of EmergencyExit. She's also done a guest comic, but I'm going to save that one for later. In the meantime, come back Wednesday for a guest comic from Dusan M. Jeftinija of Legostar Galactica.
